Abstract

The study assessed the development of competencies for entrepreneurship venture creation among students of technical and vocational teacher education in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Two research questions guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 81 final year students from Technical/Industrial and Vocational Teacher Education programme, of Ignatius Ajuro University of Education and Rivers State University who had taken entrepreneurship course. A questionnaire titled, “Competencies for Entrepreneurship Venture Creation Questionnaire” structured on a four-point rating scale was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by three experts and with overall reliability coefficient of 0.81 obtained through Cronbach Alpha. Data gathered were analysed using frequency count and mean. The result showed that majority of the identified strategies for developing competences towards entrepreneurship venture creation were employed to a low extent in the studied universities. The study also found that students had positive and high perception about their competences in entrepreneurship venture creation in the study area. Based on the result, it was recommended among others that experienced and successful entrepreneurs should be used as resource persons in teaching and learning of entrepreneurship in universities in Rivers State.
